Frost & Keeling served as the Self Performing Prime Contractor on the 15,000 Gallons Per Day (GPD) wastewater treatment system for high BOD sewage. The purpose of this facility was for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to raise sterile fruit flies and drop them by air to control damage from fruit fly infestation in the Ro Grand Valley for citrus crops. The plant consisted of two 12’ x 24’ drums that rotated, mixed, and aerated the sewage prior to being transformed to clear liquid and run by gravity to one of three evaporation ponds covering 6 acres which we lined with polyethylene. The site had zero electricity so as part of the project, we ran new concrete encased underground conduit approximately ¼ of a mile and pulled 15,000 volt cable tied to a new utility pole and transformer. The existing sewer lines were oversized and in disrepair which was preventing necessary flow of the sewage and as a result we slip lined approximately 4,600 LF of existing sewer with 8” polyethylene pipe.   Concrete work was also performed which included a 40’ x 65’ x 12” thick equipment slab.
